Sunday Selections

May 24, 2015

Finally it feels as though summer is right around the corner. Berlin put on a show for us this weekend with balmy days, lots of sunshine and a weekend of festivals thrown into the mix. There’s nothing like a festival or two to make you feel like summer has arrived is there? Yesterday, a few lovely friends and I checked out the Spargel (Asparagus) International Festival. Yes, that’s right. There’s a whole festival dedicated to Asparagus here in Berlin. Germans love are obsessed with Spargel and go slightly mad for it in spring when it comes into season. Despite the image that undoubtedly has come into your mind, the festival was surprisingly cool. International chefs from countries all over the world created their own variations of their national dishes, all featuring the beloved Spargel. There were cocktails and music and the set-up overlooked the Spree. It was a nice afternoon.

The weekend of festivities didn’t stop there, however. No. The 20th annual Karneval der Kulturen (Carnival of Cultures) was held in Berlin this weekend. This festival celebrates the cultural diversity of Berlin and is basically a four-day street party in the neighbourhood of Kreuzberg. It’s one of the biggest festivals of the year and over one million people descend on this part of Berlin to take part. Culinary delights from all over the world are on offer for festival-goers to enjoy. Today we saw the street parade slowly make its way across Kreuzberg, floats blasting music from all over the world, a swarm of people partying in its wake.

Yeah, it was a pretty nice weekend to be in Berlin. And it’s not over yet! There’s (another!) public holiday tomorrow. How great is May?!

There are so many fun things happening in Berlin at the moment Kiki. But I have to say, I’d rather be exploring Iceland — your photos are incredible! x
